What did people in mental institutions do?

Question by Boom.: What did people in mental institutions do?
Hm yeah I know probably an odd question but I was just curious as to what the patients in the old asylums actually did while in there?
I mean looking at some videos they were obviously huge, so were patients just allowed to roam free and do whatever they like? Or were there certain places they couldn’t go or do? Did they do any activities or is it true that they were abused and locked up?

Answers appreciated, thankyou!

Well, it wasn’t a pretty sight. Around the 18th century their weren’t very many rules at what you could do to patients in the asylums, which were usually found in crowded cities so they could just throw the “mentally ill” in a place away from the public eye. Doctors at these mental asylums did tests on these patients (sounds like a horror film!) which usually were fatal or left you brain dead. If you weren’t insane, you would probably go insane with the amount of torture they did to you. But in today’s asylums you will never see any kind of torture or testing. Much of the “treatment” (what they now call it) is based on trial and error, between the nurses and the head doctor staff, with the drugs and group therapy discussions the patients go through.
